Genesis 39 : 1 (NLV)
Now Joseph had been taken down to Egypt by the Ishmaelites. And Potiphar, an Egyptian leader, the head of the soldiers of Pharaoh's house, bought him from the Ishmaelites.
Genesis 39 : 2 (NLV)
The Lord was with Joseph, and all went well with him. He was in the house of his boss the Egyptian.
Genesis 39 : 3 (NLV)
Now his boss saw that the Lord was with him. He saw how the Lord made all that Joseph did go well.
Genesis 39 : 4 (NLV)
So Joseph found favor in his eyes, and worked only for him. Potiphar made him the one to watch over his house and take care of all that he owned.
Genesis 39 : 5 (NLV)
And from the time that he watched over his house and all he owned, the Lord brought good to the Egyptian's house because of Joseph. The Lord brought good upon all that he owned in the house and in the field.
Genesis 39 : 6 (NLV)
So he put all he owned in Joseph's care. Having Joseph near, he did not need to think about anything but the food he ate. Now Joseph was strong and good-looking.
Genesis 39 : 7 (NLV)
The time came when his boss's wife saw him, and she said, "Lie with me."
Genesis 39 : 8 (NLV)
But he would not do it. He said to his boss's wife, "See, with me near, my boss does not worry about anything in the house. He has put all he owns in my care.
Genesis 39 : 9 (NLV)
There is no one more important in this house than I. And he has held nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. How then could I do this sinful thing, and sin against God?"
Genesis 39 : 10 (NLV)
She spoke to Joseph day after day. But he did not listen to her. He would not lie with her or be with her.
Genesis 39 : 11 (NLV)
Then one day Joseph went into the house to do his work. None of the men of the house were inside.
Genesis 39 : 12 (NLV)
She caught him by his coat, saying, "Lie with me!" But he ran out of the house leaving the coat in her hand.
Genesis 39 : 13 (NLV)
When she saw that he had left his coat in her hand and had run out of the house,
Genesis 39 : 14 (NLV)
she called the men of her house. And she said to them, "See, this Hebrew has been brought to us to make fun of us. He came in to lie with me, and I cried out with a loud voice.
Genesis 39 : 15 (NLV)
When he heard my loud cry, he left his coat with me and ran outside."
Genesis 39 : 16 (NLV)
She kept his coat with her until his boss came home.
Genesis 39 : 17 (NLV)
Then she told him the same story, saying, "The Hebrew servant whom you brought to us came to me to lie with me.
Genesis 39 : 18 (NLV)
But when I called out in a loud voice, he left his coat with me and ran outside."
Genesis 39 : 19 (NLV)
When his boss heard his wife's story and her words, "This is what your servant did to me," he became very angry.
Genesis 39 : 20 (NLV)
So Joseph's boss took him and put him in prison, the place where the men who did wrong against the king were put in chains. So there he was in prison.
Genesis 39 : 21 (NLV)
But the Lord was with Joseph, and showed him kindness. He gave him favor in the eyes of the man who watched over the prison.
Genesis 39 : 22 (NLV)
The head of the prison put all the men who were in prison into Joseph's care. So whatever was done there was because of Joseph.
Genesis 39 : 23 (NLV)
The head of the prison did not worry about anything under Joseph's care, because the Lord was with him. The Lord made all go well with whatever Joseph did.
